Coorg (Kannada:) is a hill station town in Karnataka. Coorg, also known earlier as Mercara is the picturesque capital of Coorg. It is situated
at an elevation of 1525m. The town is dotted with red-tiled bungalows and has an old charm about it.
Coorg or Mercara the Scotland of India was founded in 1681 by Muddu Raja, the prince of the Haleri dynasty and was hence named as Muddurajakeri,
which later became Coorg.
Coorg lies in the Western Ghats and is a popular hill station. The nearest cities are Mangalore to the west and Mysore to the east. It has an elevation
of 1525 metres (5003 feet). It lies on the Karnataka State Highway 88 that runs from Mysore to Mangalore. It is 120 km from Mysore and 136 km from Mangalore
Places To Visit
Talakaveri : Talakaveri, literally means to fountain head of Kaveri, is an important religious center in the Kodagu region. Talakaveri is about 48 km west of Coorg town.
At Talakaveri you can see a sacred pond and small shrine of Goddess Kaveri at its corner. Further up, Group of larger shrines dedicated to Ganapati, Siva and Agasthya. A climb further 365 steps to top of the Brahmagiri hill can give you great panoramic view of the valley.
Raja's Seat : Legend says that the local rajas used to watch the sun set from here. There is a nice garden and a beautiful panoramic view to the valley. It's a fantastic scene during sun rise or sunset
Coorg Fort : This fort was first built by Mudduraja in the last quarter of the 17th century. He also built a palace inside the fort. It was eventually rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan who named the site as Jaffarabad. The palace was renovated by Lingarajendra Wodeyar II in 1812-1814. In the north-east corner at the entrance are two life size masonry elephants and a church is present in the south-east corner.
Abbey Falls : Beautiful falls 7-9 km from Coorg (depends where you are). Abbey means "falls" in Kannda. Also named Jesse falls (by the British) and is really a treat to watch the roaring water torrent in the monsoon season from July to October. The falls are inside a coffee plantation. Abbey Falls is a breathtaking waterfall where the Kaveri river cascades down a rockface. A hanging bridge has now been built across the gorge here offering a good view of the falls
Omkareshwara Temple : situated in the middle of Medikeri. It was built by the Lingarajendra II in1820 in the combination of Catholic, Keralite, Gothic and Islamic styles of Architecture.
Bhagamandala Temple : This temple is built at the confluence of three rivers; Cauvery, Kannika and Sujyothi. The temple is built in the Kerala style. It is situated 36kms form Coorg.
Kushal Nagar : The largest Tibetan Settlement in Southern India and monastery locally called "Golden Temple", in Bylakuppe, near Kushal Nagar. There are 2 monasteries now nearby, one old and the other is new.
Nisargadhama : is situated 3 km from Kushalnagar, there's a beautiful picnic spot called Nisargadhama. We can go for elephant ride at Nisarga Dhama
Madikeri has a moderate climate all through the year. But the best time to visit Madikeri is from October to April keeping out monsoons.
• Summers (March to May) are warm with May as warmest month, touching the temperature level about 36 °C, tourists prefer to avoid outings during May.
• Winters (November to February) are pleasant and cool with temperature drop down to 14°C in nights while the maximum temperature reaches to 29°C. This period is perfect for sightseeing and other tourist activities.
• Monsoons (June to September) offering medium rainfall and some tourists like this season. During this season seasonal waterfalls can be best enjoyed.
In October to April, Madikeri is very cool, clear and crisp. It is ideal for sightseeing and other tourist activities. June to September is nice and pleasant and perfect for short city visits. Monsoon months are good for getting a glimpse of beautiful waterfalls.
